An American Pioneer

Shannon’s life of adventure started soon after she was born. She was born Shannon Wells to American missionaries on January 14, 1943, in Shanghai, China. When she was only six weeks old, she and her parents were captured by the Japanese and held as prisoners of war for a year during the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Upon leaving China, her family settled in Bethany, Oklahoma, a suburb of Oklahoma City. One of her favorite parts of school was hearing and reading about American pioneers, which fueled her love of exploring. Despite the prejudice against women in the sciences, she attended the University of Oklahoma where she earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a masters and PhD in biochemistry. She worked as a chemist until chosen for the space program. Shannon still enjoys flying and is a commercial, instrument, and multiengine-rated pilot.
